Analyst hours typically run 70-100 hours per week, with peak periods (live deals, quarter-end) pushing higher. Junior bankers at boutiques may work fewer hours than bulge brackets but compensation differs accordingly. Hours generally improve at associate and above.
No. Banks hire from diverse majors — economics, math, engineering, even humanities at top schools. What matters: GPA (typically 3.7+ at non-targets), networking effort, demonstrated interest (clubs, internships), and technical preparation.
Bulge brackets (GS, MS, JPM, BofA, Citi, Barclays) cover all products globally. Elite boutiques (Centerview, Evercore, Lazard, PJT, Moelis) focus on M&A advisory and restructuring with lower deal volume but higher pay-per-banker. Both are strong exits to PE.
For summer analyst (sophomore year): start technicals in fall sophomore, network in winter, apply when applications open (typically early sophomore or junior year — increasingly early). For full-time: start in sophomore year. The timeline keeps accelerating.
